[edit]There's just one thing that strikes me as odd about this well-written, informative article:
- Harris' film The Long Way Home deals with the experience of Jewish refugees after World War II. Spike Lee condemned the second half of the film as propaganda for the state of Israel; nonetheless the film won the 1997 Oscar for documentary.
I mean, hey, who doesn't love Spike Lee, but I can't help but read this as though the Academy overrode his veto with a two-thirds vote after a last-minute lobbying campaign and a filibuster by a freshman Senator. :)
I have to admit I'm not very familiar with Harris or The Long Way Home specifically. Was there a much bigger hullaballoo over this film, of which Lee's condemnation is given only as an example? Did it garner an Oscar in spite of controversy, or thanks to the publicity it gave? --Brion 04:54 Mar 31, 2003 (UTC)
- Hm, I didn't mean to say it was it was a filibuster; I just remembered a disdainful comment Lee made in an interview. I don't know about the back room politics. And I wasn't aware of the film until a few years after it came out, so I don't remember the controversy I'm sure it and/or Lee caused. Feel free to hedge or clarify however it needs it.
